St Mark's Campanile

St Mark’s Campanile is the bell tower of Piazza San Marco in Venice, Italy, and one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks. The current tower was rebuilt and completed in 1912 after the previous structure collapsed in 1902.

The tower stands about 98.6 metres tall and contains the belfry and an observation platform that provides wide views over the Piazza and the Venetian lagoon. At the base is a small Renaissance loggia; the tower’s bells remain prominent features and the lift gives visitor access to the viewing level.

The original tower evolved from a medieval watchtower and belfry; it served as a lighthouse, bell tower, and civic symbol. After the 1902 collapse, authorities reconstructed it as a faithful copy of the previous tower, completing work in 1912.

The campanile sits at the eastern end of Piazza San Marco, adjacent to St Mark’s Basilica and the Doge’s Palace, in the historic center of Venice. The site is at ground level in the main tourist area of Venice, accessible on foot from the city’s principal vaporetto stops.
