How to Get Around St. Joseph
St. Joseph is easiest to navigate by car - rentals or your own vehicle give the most freedom to reach attractions and nearby areas. For downtown visitors, walking and short rideshare or taxi trips work well; the local bus network fills in gaps but runs less frequently than in larger cities.
- Car / Rental ($35-80/day) - Driving is the most convenient way to explore St. Joseph and the surrounding northwest Missouri countryside - major routes include US-36, US-169 and I-29 a short distance to the west. Rental cars are widely available at Kansas City International (MCI) if you fly in; a car gives the flexibility to reach riverfront parks, museums and nearby towns. Parking in downtown St. Joseph is generally free or low-cost, and a car is particularly useful if your itinerary includes sites outside the compact core.
- Taxis & Rideshare (Uber/Lyft) ($8-120) - Uber and Lyft operate in St. Joseph but coverage and wait times can be slower than in larger metros, especially late at night. For short trips inside the city fares are reasonable; expect higher, distance-based fares for airport runs to MCI. Taxis are available locally and can be useful for quick point-to-point trips when buses or rideshares are limited.
- St. Joseph Transit (local bus) ($1-1.50) - St. Joseph Transit operates the city's fixed-route bus network and paratransit services, serving downtown, neighborhoods and major trip generators. Routes run on regular schedules Monday-Saturday (limited service on Sundays/holidays); buses are the cheapest way to travel around town but schedules can be infrequent outside core hours. Check the local transit website or posted timetables for route maps and connections.
- Jefferson Lines (intercity bus) ($8-25) - Jefferson Lines provides intercity connections between St. Joseph, Kansas City and other regional destinations; this is a practical, low-cost alternative to driving for one-way travel. Fares and schedules vary but trips to Kansas City generally take about 60-90 minutes. Buses are a good option if you don't want to rent a car and are comfortable with fixed schedules.
- Biking ($0-20/day) - Downtown St. Joseph is compact and reasonably bikeable for short trips; the riverfront and park trails are pleasant for recreational cycling. Infrastructure is a mix of on-street routes and multi-use paths - bring your own bike if possible, as formal bike-share options are limited. Use caution on busier arterial roads where bike lanes are not present.
- Walking - Much of downtown St. Joseph - including the historic Main Street, riverfront and several museums - is best explored on foot; distances are short and sidewalks are continuous. Walking gives the best feel for the city's historic core and is often faster than waiting for transit for short trips.
