St. Hedwig’s Cathedral is the Roman Catholic cathedral in central Berlin, located on Bebelplatz near the historic boulevard Unter den Linden. It was constructed in the 18th century and serves as the seat of the Catholic archbishop in the city.
The church is notable for its circular, domed form inspired by early Christian and classical models, with a nave that emphasizes a centralised liturgical space. After damage in World War II the building was repaired and later refurbished for liturgical and public use.
Commissioned in the mid-18th century under Prussian rule, the cathedral was completed in the second half of the 1700s for Berlin’s Catholic community. It sustained damage during the Second World War and was restored in the postwar period to resume its role as a principal Catholic church in the city.
The cathedral stands in central Berlin in the Mitte district, close to other major cultural and historic sites such as the State Opera, Humboldt University and the Brandenburg Gate area.
