St. George's Basilica
Religious Site Romanesque basilica within Prague Castle complex
Romanesque basilica within Prague Castle, among the city’s oldest churches. Visitors view historic interiors, early Romanesque architecture and the basilica’s role in castle history.
St. George’s Basilica (Bazilika svatého Jiří) is a Romanesque church located within the Prague Castle complex in Prague. It is one of the oldest surviving ecclesiastical buildings in the castle area, originating in the early medieval period.
The basilica’s Romanesque architecture and surviving medieval interiors draw interest for their age and construction. Its compact form and stone vaulting make it a distinct contrast to the later Gothic and Baroque buildings around Prague Castle.
Founded in the early 10th century, the basilica was extended and rebuilt in subsequent medieval centuries and has undergone repairs after fires and alterations. Over time it has been adapted to different liturgical and cultural uses while retaining core Romanesque elements.
The church stands inside the Prague Castle precinct on the Prague Castle hill (Hradcany), immediately accessible as part of the castle complex and near other historic buildings and courtyards.
- Age and setting: Located within the Prague Castle complex and one of the oldest surviving church buildings at the site, showing Romanesque masonry and later medieval additions.
- Current use: Often used for concerts and exhibitions because of its acoustics and interior volume; entry is typically through the Prague Castle visitor routes.
How to Get to St. George's Basilica #
St. George’s Basilica (Bazilika sv. Jiří) lies within the Prague Castle complex on Hradčany. The easiest public route is tram 22 (and some other castle-serving trams) to the Pražský hrad/Prazsky hrad stop, then a short walk up into the castle grounds to the basilica; Malostranská (metro A) is also within a 10-15 minute walk of the castle. Driving in the castle area is restricted and parking is limited.
Tips for Visiting St. George's Basilica #
- Plan to enter Prague Castle grounds when they open and make the basilica one of your first stops to avoid the midday crowds that build across the castle complex.
- Access the basilica via the Prague Castle circuit rather than approaching from below; check the castle's ticket types and opening hours in advance because the basilica is part of the broader paid circuit and can close for services.
- Allow time inside for the Romanesque interior and the tombs and cloister areas-these are compact but historically important and often overlooked by visitors rushing through the castle.
