St Donat’s Castle is a medieval castle on the Vale of Glamorgan coast in south Wales, near the village of St Donats and the town of Llantwit Major. It occupies a coastal promontory and incorporates a mix of medieval and later historic fabric.
Architectural highlights include fortified stone walls, a great hall and landscaped grounds with sea views; the site is known for its revival and conservation work. The estate includes historic buildings adapted for educational and residential use.
The castle developed from a medieval stronghold into an estate with later additions and restorations. In the 20th century parts of the property were restored and adapted for institutional use.
St Donat’s Castle sits on the southern Welsh coast overlooking the Bristol Channel, approximately 30 kilometres west of Cardiff and close to the coast between Llantwit Major and the seaside town of Barry.
- Current use: Since the 1960s the castle has been the site of an international residential school, United World College Atlantic, which occupies parts of the estate.
