St. Boniface, Winnipeg

St. Boniface is a historic district of Winnipeg, Manitoba, on the east bank of the Red River and serves as the principal centre of Winnipeg’s Franco-Manitoban community. The neighbourhood was settled in the early 19th century and retains a strong francophone cultural identity.

A compact commercial and cultural area with riverfront views, small museums, cafes and historic church ruins. Key sights cluster along Provencher Boulevard and the riverfront, with a pedestrian bridge linking the district to downtown across the Red River.

Founded as a francophone settlement and mission in the early 1800s, the area grew into a separate municipality and later became part of the city of Winnipeg. Its identity has long been shaped by francophone institutions, churches and cultural organisations.

Sitting on the east bank of the Red River, about 2 kilometres from downtown Winnipeg, the district occupies low riverfront land facing the downtown skyline and is bounded by the river and urban neighbourhoods to the east.
