St Albans Cathedral, formally the Cathedral and Abbey Church of St Alban, is the Anglican cathedral in the city of St Albans, England, and occupies the site traditionally associated with Britain’s first recorded Christian martyr. The present building incorporates major Norman structures and later medieval additions.
The cathedral contains a Norman nave and central tower that were part of major construction begun in 1077 under the Benedictine abbey, along with chapels and fittings added through the 13th to 15th centuries. It is notable for its shrine of St Alban and long continuity as a place of Christian worship.
The site evolved from a monastic center into a cathedral over many centuries, with restorations and conservation work in the 19th and 20th centuries to maintain the medieval fabric. It continues to function as a working cathedral and heritage site.
