Sørkappøya
Island Small island south of Spitsbergen in Svalbard
Sørkappøya is a small, uninhabited island at the southern end of the Svalbard archipelago, lying off the southern tip of Spitsbergen. It is administered as part of Svalbard under Norwegian sovereignty.
The island is remote and occupies a polar maritime environment; it is notable as undisturbed Arctic habitat for seabirds, seals and occasionally polar bears and is included in Svalbard’s protected-area network and management regimes.
There are no permanent settlements on the island and access is infrequent, typically limited to scientific, monitoring or occasional expedition visits by sea during the ice season.
Geographically it sits immediately south of Spitsbergen’s southern cape (Sørkapp) in the Arctic Ocean, forming the southernmost land feature of the Svalbard group.
