Sør-Spitsbergen National Park
National Park Vast Svalbard national park covering southern Spitsbergen
Protected area covering southern Spitsbergen in Svalbard, with glaciers, tundra and seabird colonies. Expedition cruises and scientific visits focus on polar wildlife, glacial scenery and Arctic fieldwork.
Sør-Spitsbergen National Park covers the southern part of Spitsbergen island in the Svalbard archipelago and protects high-Arctic mountain, glacier and fjord landscapes. It is a major protected area within Norwegian Svalbard designated to conserve Arctic ecosystems and wildlife.
The park includes heavily glaciated fjords, steep mountains and coastal areas used by seabirds, seals, walrus and polar bears, and it supports Svalbard reindeer and Arctic fox populations. Access is seasonal and commonly undertaken from Longyearbyen by boat, snowmobile or guided expedition depending on conditions.
The national park was established to conserve the distinctive Svalbard environment and its wildlife and has been managed under Norway’s Svalbard environmental regulations. Its status restricts many forms of development and requires that visitors follow strict environmental and safety rules.
Geographically it occupies the southern sector of Spitsbergen in the Arctic Ocean and is administered as part of the Svalbard archipelago under Norwegian jurisdiction. Longyearbyen is the primary logistical gateway for expeditions into the park.
- Wildlife safety: The area is Arctic polar-bear country; guided travel and strict safety measures are required when visiting.
What to See #
- Hornsund fjord: Hornsund, a deeply incised glacial fjord in the park known for its glaciers flowing to the sea and frequent wildlife sightings.

- Never travel independently on the pack ice - always hire a licensed, experienced Svalbard guide or operator.
- Visit from Longyearbyen: small-boat wildlife cruises and day trips are the only realistic way to see much of the park.
