Sprogø
Island Small Danish island hosting Great Belt bridge infrastructure
Sprogø sits in the Great Belt between Funen and Zealand, noted for its lighthouse, remnants of ferry infrastructure and seabird colonies; it appears on organized boat tours.
Sprogø is a small islet in the Great Belt strait between the Danish islands of Zealand and Funen. The island functions as the central link island for the Great Belt Fixed Link, carrying bridge and tunnel infrastructure for road and rail traffic across the strait.
The islet contains a lighthouse and a number of service and maintenance buildings that supported construction and ongoing operation of the fixed link. Visit-related activity is limited because the island is primarily an operational and maintenance site rather than a public recreational destination.
Historically the islet has served maritime and navigational roles in the Great Belt; its role expanded in the 20th century when it became integral to the construction and operation of the Great Belt crossing.
Geographically Sprogø sits roughly midway across the Great Belt, forming a visible landmark between the larger islands of Zealand and Funen and acting as the structural midpoint of the fixed crossing.
- Strategic position: Positioned roughly midway across the Great Belt, it serves as the central island for the Great Belt Fixed Link road and rail connection
- Access and use: Public access is limited; the island has been used primarily for bridge infrastructure, operations, and occasional guided visits rather than general tourism
