Spotted Lake
Lake Mineral-rich saline lake with distinctive polka-dot pools
British Columbia’s Spotted Lake (Kliluk) near Osoyoos reveals mineral‑rich pools that concentrate in summer into distinct colored spots. Seasonal exposure and First Nations significance draw photographers, though shoreline access is limited.
Spotted Lake (often called Kliluk by local Indigenous people) is a small saline, mineral-rich lake in southern British Columbia, Canada. It is noted for its marked, colored spots that appear on the surface in dry months due to high concentrations of minerals.
In summer the lake’s water level drops and discrete mineral pools form dozens of round, colored spots across the surface; individual spots can be several metres across. The visual effect is seasonal and most easily seen from the roadside viewpoint on the adjacent highway because the lakeshore itself is on private land and access is restricted.
The lake has long been regarded as sacred and was used historically by Indigenous peoples for its mineral waters and therapeutic associations. In more recent decades the site has been recognised for its ecological and cultural importance and access has been managed to protect the feature.
Located in the Okanagan region of southern British Columbia near Osoyoos, the lake sits close to the provincial border with Washington State in a semi-arid valley.
- Summer spots: Mineral-rich waters form circular 'spots' during summer as the lake evaporates, producing distinct colors and patterns.
- Access and cultural significance: The site is sacred to local Indigenous peoples and is on private land with public viewing available from a roadside viewpoint rather than unrestricted access to the shoreline.
