Spina

Spina was an ancient Etruscan port city located in the Po Delta region of present-day Emilia-Romagna, Italy, founded around the 6th century BC. It functioned as an important trading hub on the Adriatic coast during the Archaic and Classical periods.

The archaeological area includes extensive burial grounds where richly furnished tombs were excavated, along with canal and harbour remains that testify to Spina’s role as a lagoon port. Significant finds include imported Greek pottery, bronzes and ornaments now held in regional museums.

Spina developed in the 6th century BC as an Etruscan emporium and trading centre linking inland Italy to Adriatic trade routes. The site declined and was eventually abandoned as the Po Delta changed course and the lagoon silted up in later centuries; systematic excavations in the 20th century revealed its necropoleis and artefacts.

The site lies in the eastern Po Delta near Comacchio in Emilia-Romagna, in the low-lying coastal plain that once formed the lagoon and harbour system used by the ancient city.
