The Early Christian Monuments of Ravenna are a group of late Roman and early Byzantine buildings in the city of Ravenna, celebrated for their well-preserved mosaic decoration and architectural innovation. The ensemble was inscribed as a World Heritage Site for its outstanding early Christian art dating mainly to the 5th and 6th centuries.

Principal attractions include the centrally planned Basilica of San Vitale, the richly decorated Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, the basilicas of Sant’Apollinare Nuovo and Sant’Apollinare in Classe, and several early baptisteries and chapels; the mosaics depict imperial figures, saints and biblical narratives with striking colour and detail. The buildings illustrate the transition from Western Roman to Byzantine artistic and liturgical traditions and are key references for early Christian iconography.

These monuments were built and decorated under Ostrogothic and Byzantine rule in the 5th and 6th centuries and have been preserved within the city fabric, allowing close study of early Christian ecclesiastical architecture and mosaic technique.

The monuments are located in the city of Ravenna on Italy’s north-eastern Adriatic plain, approximately 70 to 80 kilometres from the larger regional centres to the west and north, and easily reached from nearby regional transport hubs.

Ravenna is served by regional Trenitalia trains from Bologna (Bologna Centrale → Ravenna); journey time is about 1-1.5 hours. By car from Bologna it’s roughly 70-80 km, typically via the A14/SS16, around an hour to 90 minutes depending on traffic.

Ravenna’s UNESCO monuments (e.g., Basilica of San Vitale, Mausoleum of Galla Placidia) lie in the city centre: Ravenna Centrale station is about a 20-25 minute walk or a short local bus/taxi ride from the main monuments.

• Visit the core monuments (Basilica of San Vitale and the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia) first thing in the morning to enjoy the mosaics with much smaller crowds and softer light; Ravenna also sees big midday spikes from cruise-ship and coach arrivals so avoid late morning-early afternoon if possible.
• San Vitale, Galla Placidia and the Neonian Baptistery sit within a short walking cluster-plan a single walking loop so you don't waste time transiting between sites and can use the same ticketing window or office to buy/collect admissions.
• Reserve tickets or check opening times in advance for the smaller sites (Galla Placidia in particular has limited capacity and restricted visiting hours), and schedule Sant'Apollinare in Classe for a separate trip outside the historic centre since it lies beyond the city and requires a bus or taxi ride.
