The Speicherstadt and Kontorhaus District with Chilehaus in Hamburg is a combined urban ensemble of historic warehouses, office districts and the iconic Chilehaus office block, representing Hamburg’s commercial port expansion in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The property was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2015.

The warehouse district was developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to expand port storage capacity and facilitate transshipment of goods. The Kontorhaus area and Chilehaus were built in the early 20th century as commercial office developments to house trading firms and administrative functions, reflecting changing commercial architecture and urban planning of the period.

The property sits in central Hamburg on the Elbe’s HafenCity area and the adjacent inner-city blocks; it is within walking distance of Hamburg Central Station and the city’s main waterfront areas.

• UNESCO inscription: The ensemble was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2015 for its outstanding example of port-related commercial architecture and urban planning from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
• Good viewpoints: Best light for photography is early morning or late afternoon along the canals when the brick facades catch directional light; several pedestrian bridges give elevated viewpoints across canal basins.

• Kontorhaus District: A contiguous early 20th century commercial office district developed as a response to modern business needs, containing large brick office buildings with representative facades and integrated urban blocks.
• Chilehaus: An architecturally distinctive Expressionist office building completed in the early 1920s, designed by Fritz Höger and famed for its angular, ship-like prow and patterned brickwork.

The Speicherstadt and Kontorhaus District (including Chilehaus) are in central Hamburg. Take S‑Bahn lines S1/S2/S3 to Hamburg Hauptbahnhof and walk about 15-20 minutes to the warehouse district, or take the U‑bahn U3 to Baumwall (short walk of around 5-10 minutes) or the U4 to HafenCity Universität for the Kontorhaus area. Plenty of local buses also serve the HafenCity/Speicherstadt area.

• Arrive at first light to photograph the red‑brick facades and empty canals of the Speicherstadt-early morning gives calm water reflections and far fewer tourists than daytime.
• Enter the warehouse district from the quieter northern canal side (Brooktorhafen/Kehrwieder area) rather than the main HafenCity tourist piers to avoid the heaviest foot traffic and get better canal-side photo angles.
• Walk from the Speicherstadt into the Kontorhaus district on foot to see Chilehaus from different approaches (Burchardstraße/Pumpen side) and notice architectural details and courtyards many passersby miss when they stick to the main thoroughfares.
