Montjuïc Castle

Montjuïc Castle is a 17th-century military fortress on Montjuïc hill in Barcelona, Spain, occupying a prominent hilltop position overlooking the city and harbour. The site has visible 17th- and 18th-century military architecture and extensive defensive terraces.

The castle’s outer ramparts and terraces are primary visitor attractions, with wide views across Barcelona, the port and the Mediterranean. Interior spaces include a large parade ground and vaulted casemates that are used for exhibitions and interpretation.

Constructed as a fortress in the 17th century and reinforced in later periods, the site was used for military control of the city and subsequently as a prison and place of execution in the 19th and 20th centuries. In recent decades the fortress has been managed for cultural uses and public visits.

The castle sits on the crest of Montjuïc hill, southwest of Barcelona’s medieval centre and adjacent to the city’s Montjuïc park and Olympic facilities.

• Access: Accessible on foot from Montjuïc park, by the Montjuïc funicular or the Montjuïc cable car, which provide the most direct visitor approaches.
