Southampton Island
Island Arctic Canadian island in Hudson Bay with tundra wildlife
Remote Arctic island at the entrance to Hudson Bay in Nunavut. Visits focus on Inuit communities, migratory seabird colonies and sea mammals like beluga; access is by charter and requires planning.
Southampton Island is a large Arctic island in the northern part of Hudson Bay, within the territory of Nunavut, Canada. The island is characterized by tundra landscapes, coastal wetlands and important bird and marine habitats.
The island’s wildlife and coastal environments attract attention for bird colonies and Arctic species rather than developed tourist infrastructure. Human presence is limited, with a single permanent settlement and seasonal activities related to hunting, fishing and research.
Historically the island was occupied by the Sadlermiut, an indigenous group that became extinct in the early 20th century following contact-related disease events; later the island has been occupied by Inuit communities. Traditional subsistence livelihoods and cultural sites remain part of the island’s heritage.
Southampton Island sits at the northern entrance to Hudson Bay and is part of Nunavut’s Kivalliq Region, separated from mainland and other islands by channels and sounds in the outer Hudson Bay archipelago.
- Wildlife and nature: The island has important Arctic wildlife and bird colonies and is visited for wildlife observation and remote Arctic culture.
- Settlement: Coral Harbour is the only permanent community on the island and provides local services and seasonal transport links.
What to See #
- Coral Harbour: Coral Harbour is the primary settlement on the island, located on the western shore and serving as the administrative and service centre for the community.
- East Bay Migratory Bird Sanctuary: East Bay hosts a migratory bird sanctuary and is an important site for waterfowl and shorebird colonies along the island's eastern coast.
How to Get to Southampton Island #
Southampton Island is in northern Hudson Bay and has no road connection to the Canadian mainland. Access is by air or by sea: scheduled/regional flights serve the main settlement (Coral Harbour) from other Nunavut or Manitoba hubs, and community boats operate in summer. There are no through highways; plan onward travel by local charter or scheduled flights.
Tips for Visiting Southampton Island #
- Access to Southampton Island is by air only-plan flights well in advance and coordinate arrival/departure with the hamlet that serves the island (Coral Harbour) because services, accommodation and local transport are very limited.
- Arrange guided trips or local charters before you travel; independent travel options are sparse and experienced local operators are necessary for wildlife viewing, remote beaches and any boat or tundra excursions.
- Treat logistical details as the priority: confirm fuel, food and emergency arrangements with local providers ahead of time-there are long distances and no road connections to southern Nunavut communities.
Best Time to Visit Southampton Island #
The best time is the short Arctic summer (June-August) when conditions are least severe and access is easiest.
