Main image

South Street Seaport is a historic district on the East River in Lower Manhattan that preserves 19th-century maritime streets, piers and mercantile buildings. It grew around the original South Street port and later became a conservation and commercial area with museums, shops and restaurants.

The district includes restored cobblestone streets, historic commercial buildings and river piers that house the seaport museum, retail and event spaces. The waterfront location offers direct views of the Brooklyn Bridge and access to riverfront promenades and seasonal events.

Historically it was one of New York’s principal seaports in the 19th century, handling shipping, fisheries and trade; as shipping moved to larger modern facilities the area declined and later efforts focused on preservation and adaptive reuse. The South Street Seaport Museum and conservation work retained and repurposed many historic structures for public interpretation and commercial use.

The Seaport sits along the East River at the southern end of Manhattan’s Financial District, adjacent to Fulton Street and a short walk from the Brooklyn Bridge pedestrian approaches. It is reached easily from Lower Manhattan transit hubs and is oriented toward riverfront activity.

  • Historic fabric: Cobblestone streets and restored 19th-century buildings remain intact, offering one of Manhattan's best preserved historic port streetscapes.
  • Views and timing: Riverside piers and Pier 17 provide direct views of the Brooklyn Bridge and the East River, popular at sunset and during summer events.

What to See #

  • South Street Seaport Museum: Operates a maritime museum with reconstructed historic vessels, exhibitions on the port's 19th-century history, and education programmes about New York Harbor. The museum occupies restored mercantile buildings near the piers.
  • Pier 17: A rebuilt and modernised pier and event space that provides rooftop public space, restaurants and seasonal concerts, and offers clear views of the Brooklyn Bridge and East River.
  • Historic district and buildings: A historic cluster of cobblestone streets and 19th-century mercantile buildings along Fulton and Front Streets that houses shops, restaurants and preserved facades from the seaport era.
