How to Get to South Lake Tahoe
South Lake Tahoe is best reached by flying into Reno-Tahoe (RNO) or driving; once there shuttles, local buses and driving handle most travel. In winter a car with winter capability or pre-booked shuttle is strongly recommended.
Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO): The closest major airport to South Lake Tahoe for many visitors; drive time is roughly 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes depending on route and winter conditions. Shared shuttles (e.g., South Tahoe Airporter and private shuttle companies) typically run one-way and commonly cost in the USD 50-80 range; rental cars are also common, but winter chains or AWD are recommended in snowy months.
Sacramento International Airport (SMF): A longer drive (~2-2.5 hours), sometimes used for lower fares or broader flight availability.
Train: There is no direct intercity passenger rail into South Lake Tahoe; the nearest operational Amtrak stops are well outside the basin.
Bus / Shuttle: Regional shuttle operators (South Tahoe Airporter, private ski shuttles) connect RNO/SMF to South Lake Tahoe; local BlueGO buses and the Tahoe Transportation District provide local routes around town and to ski areas (fares vary, local bus fares are typically a few dollars per ride). During winter expect longer journey times because of weather and traffic.
