Korean Air is a full-service international carrier focused on providing broad connectivity between South Korea and the rest of the world, operating a strong mix of regional and long-haul services. From a traveler’s perspective it is positioned as a legacy carrier with a reputation for comprehensive international route coverage and service levels typical of full-service airlines.

The airline is a member of the SkyTeam alliance and works with a wide set of partner carriers and codeshares to extend its network beyond its own scheduled flights. Its route footprint emphasizes long-haul international travel out of Incheon (ICN) alongside significant short-haul operations through Gimpo (GMP).

SKYPASS - Korean Air's Frequent Flyer Program

Korean Air’s loyalty program is called SKYPASS. Members earn miles from flown segments based on fare class and distance (and from many airline and non-airline partners), and miles can be redeemed for award travel, upgrades and partner services; exact accrual and redemption values depend on fare class and route. SKYPASS recognizes frequent flyers with elite tiers-commonly referred to as Morning Calm and Morning Calm Premium, with lifetime recognition categories for very high accumulation-and awards SkyTeam Elite Plus benefits when applicable. Major partners include SkyTeam members such as Delta and Air France-KLM, which are useful for earning and redeeming miles across alliances. For most international travelers, crediting Korean Air flights to SKYPASS is worthwhile, especially on long-haul itineraries where miles and elite benefits are more valuable.

Where Korean Air Flies

Korean Air is built around Incheon (ICN) as its primary international gateway, with significant short-haul operations also operating through Gimpo (GMP). The airline serves a mix of domestic and regional routes across East Asia plus extensive long-haul services to North America, Europe and Oceania, with frequent connections between Korea and major global gateways. Incheon is the focal point for most long-haul flights and international connections, while Gimpo handles many domestic and nearby international routes; the carrier also extends its network through SkyTeam partners and numerous codeshares to broaden its global reach.

Aircraft and Cabin Classes

Korean Air operates a mixed fleet of narrowbodies for short- and medium-haul services and widebodies for long-haul international routes, including types such as the Airbus A220, A330 and A380, and Boeing 737 Next Generation, 747-8, 777 and 787 families. Cabins on long-haul aircraft typically include First, Business (marketed as Prestige on many aircraft), Premium Economy on selected aircraft, and Economy, with business class on widebodies generally offering lie-flat seats on long-haul services. Economy cabins provide standard long-haul amenities, while premium cabins on the newest widebodies emphasize greater space and direct-aisle access on some layouts; offerings vary by aircraft and route.

Tips for Flying Korean Air

  • Sign up for SKYPASS before booking so you can earn miles on paid tickets and partner flights and have them recorded retroactively if needed.
  • Verify baggage allowance on your ticket: international fares typically include checked baggage but allowances vary by route and fare class, so check the fare rules before packing.
  • If you want lounge access at Incheon (ICN), it is generally available to First/Business passengers and SkyTeam Elite Plus members-carry proof of class/elite status when traveling.
  • Choose seats early on long-haul flights; premium cabins and bulkhead/exit-row seats can sell out and seat selection policies vary by fare type.
  • Use the airline app or website to check-in and manage bookings, but double-check visa/transit requirements for layovers through Incheon or other hubs.
