Souda (island) is a small island at the mouth of Souda Bay off the northwest coast of Crete, near the city of Chania. It is dominated by a Venetian-built fortress constructed to control the strategic bay.
The most visible feature is the 16th-century Venetian fortress and its defensive walls, which occupy much of the island’s area. There are also cemeteries, memorials and other remains from Ottoman and modern military use, though public access is limited.
Venetian authorities fortified the island in the 16th century to secure Souda Bay and protect maritime approaches to Crete. The island later saw Ottoman and modern military use and contains war graves and memorials from those periods.
Souda island sits at the entrance to Souda Bay near the port of Souda, close to the city of Chania on Crete’s northwest coast and is easily visible from the Chania shoreline.
- Access restrictions: The island's fortifications date to the Venetian period and dominate the small land area, but access is restricted because the bay and surrounding facilities are of ongoing military and naval importance.
What to See #
- Venetian fortress: Fortress and walls dating mainly to Venetian construction in the 16th century, built to control access to Souda Bay and protect the harbour.
- Military cemeteries: Ottoman and modern-period military cemeteries and memorials occupying parts of the island and reflecting its use in later centuries.
