Sotra is a coastal island and part of a larger archipelago off the west coast of Norway in Vestland county. It forms part of the inhabited island group immediately west of Bergen.

How to Get to Sotra #
Sotra is an island west of Bergen, Norway, connected to the mainland by the Sotrabrua (Sotra Bridge). The bridge carries the main road from Bergen (Rv. 555/County/National route 555) onto the island - drive from Bergen across Sotrabrua to reach the villages and coastal roads on Sotra.
Bergen’s regional buses (Skyss) operate services across the bridge to settlements on Sotra; from bus stops it is typically a short walk into the towns and coastal trails. Private car is the most flexible way to explore the island.
Tips for Visiting Sotra #
- Enter Sotra from the Knarrevik/Storavatnet side (the bridge junction from Bergen) - Knarrevik is the main service hub and a convenient starting point for island hikes and drives.
- Hike to Kolbeinsvarden (the island's prominent viewpoint) for broad coastal panoramas; local marked paths start from villages near the eastern bridge and are easier to find from Knarrevik.
- If you're driving from Bergen, avoid the morning and late-afternoon commuter peaks on the Sotra Bridge to skip traffic and get earlier access to trailheads.
