Sotra is a coastal island and part of a larger archipelago off the west coast of Norway in Vestland county. It forms part of the inhabited island group immediately west of Bergen.

The island group combines rocky, hilly coastal landscapes with fishing communities, small harbours and roadside settlements. Recreational hiking and coastal drives are common, and the islands support local fisheries and marine activities.

Historically the islands were fishing and seafaring communities; in the 20th and 21st centuries road links have integrated Sotra more closely with Bergen and the wider urban economy. Infrastructure development has encouraged commuting and residential growth on the larger islands.

How to Get to Sotra #

Sotra is an island west of Bergen, Norway, connected to the mainland by the Sotrabrua (Sotra Bridge). The bridge carries the main road from Bergen (Rv. 555/County/National route 555) onto the island - drive from Bergen across Sotrabrua to reach the villages and coastal roads on Sotra.

Bergen’s regional buses (Skyss) operate services across the bridge to settlements on Sotra; from bus stops it is typically a short walk into the towns and coastal trails. Private car is the most flexible way to explore the island.

Tips for Visiting Sotra #

  • Enter Sotra from the Knarrevik/Storavatnet side (the bridge junction from Bergen) - Knarrevik is the main service hub and a convenient starting point for island hikes and drives.
  • Hike to Kolbeinsvarden (the island's prominent viewpoint) for broad coastal panoramas; local marked paths start from villages near the eastern bridge and are easier to find from Knarrevik.
  • If you're driving from Bergen, avoid the morning and late-afternoon commuter peaks on the Sotra Bridge to skip traffic and get earlier access to trailheads.
