Sonoran Desert National Monument is a Bureau of Land Management unit in southern Arizona that protects Sonoran Desert landscapes and species. It encompasses a large expanse of desert habitat and cultural sites within the Sonoran Desert.

The monument features classic Sonoran Desert vegetation including stands of saguaro cactus, creosote scrub and desert washes, interspersed with low mountain ranges and valleys. Visitors come for backcountry hiking, desert scenery, wildlife viewing and to see archaeological and historic sites such as petroglyphs and old ranch remnants. Much of the area is undeveloped, so recreation is often dispersed and self-reliant.

The unit was designated as a national monument to preserve contiguous desert habitat and archaeological resources and is administered by the BLM. Management emphasizes conservation of natural and cultural values while allowing low-intensity recreational use.

The monument is located in south-central Arizona within the Sonoran Desert, occupying public lands south and west of the Phoenix metropolitan area and spanning portions of local counties.

  • Management and access: Designated as a national monument and managed by the Bureau of Land Management, with large tracts of undeveloped desert and limited infrastructure.
  • Access considerations: Expect extensive dirt roads and remote backcountry; four-wheel drive and preparation for hot, dry conditions are recommended for deeper exploration.
