Sonnjoch is a mountain peak in the Karwendel Alps of Tyrol, Austria, rising to approximately 2,457 metres. It is a prominent summit within the northern Karwendel massif.
Hikers and mountaineers visit for the exposed summit ridge and broad views; routes approach the peak from the valleys to the north and south and require mountain experience on steeper sections. From the summit there are clear vistas over the Achensee and the surrounding Alpine ridges.
The peak is a natural Alpine feature long used for local pasture access and mountaineering; its name and routes have been part of regional alpine tradition rather than a man-made history.
Sonnjoch sits in the Tyrolean Karwendel range, above the Achensee lake area and the valley communities that lie on the lake’s shores and nearby alpine valleys.

How to Get to Sonnjoch #
Nearest roadheads are from the villages along the A12 near Schwaz or from the Achensee area; public buses serve valleys with connections to trailheads. For the Hochlandhütte approach, travel to the village of Pertisau or take regional transit toward Falzthurn or Gramais and start the hike from the Falzthurntal parking area.
Tips for Visiting Sonnjoch #
- Start early to avoid afternoon storms - Sonnjoch sits over the Karwendel where weather builds fast.
- If aiming for the summit, use the normal ridge route from the Hochlandhütte and be sure to have solid mountain footwear; route-finding can be tricky in low visibility.
- The north face is steep and technical; only attempt with proper alpine gear and local guide experience.
