Main image

Sonnjoch is a mountain peak in the Karwendel Alps of Tyrol, Austria, rising to approximately 2,457 metres. It is a prominent summit within the northern Karwendel massif.

Hikers and mountaineers visit for the exposed summit ridge and broad views; routes approach the peak from the valleys to the north and south and require mountain experience on steeper sections. From the summit there are clear vistas over the Achensee and the surrounding Alpine ridges.

The peak is a natural Alpine feature long used for local pasture access and mountaineering; its name and routes have been part of regional alpine tradition rather than a man-made history.

Sonnjoch sits in the Tyrolean Karwendel range, above the Achensee lake area and the valley communities that lie on the lake’s shores and nearby alpine valleys.

  • Elevation: Summit elevation 2,457 metres, making it one of the prominent peaks of the Karwendel range in Tyrol.
  • Recreation note: Popular summer and late-spring destination for experienced hikers and via ferrata enthusiasts, offering extensive alpine views over the Achensee and surrounding Karwendel valleys.
