Soltaniyeh

Soltaniyeh is an archaeological complex in Zanjan province, Iran, centered on a monumental early 14th-century mausoleum built for the Ilkhanid ruler Oljeitu. The site is noted for its massive brick-built dome and surviving architectural decoration from the Ilkhanid period.

The main monument is a large, octagonal masonry mausoleum capped by a high dome and decorated with tile and brick detailing; surrounding remains indicate a wider royal and ceremonial precinct. The structure demonstrates developments in dome construction and Persian masonry techniques during the Ilkhanid era.

Construction of the mausoleum took place in the early 1300s and it served as a dynastic tomb and a statement of Ilkhanid imperial power. Over time the complex has been damaged and conserved, but the main dome remains a defining historic monument.

The complex is located at Soltaniyeh in Zanjan province in northwest Iran, where the mausoleum dominates the archaeological landscape.
