Solovki

Solovki denotes the Solovetsky Islands in the White Sea and the historic religious and cultural complex there centered on the Solovetsky Monastery. The islands are notable for a large medieval monastery ensemble and for later 20th century history.

Visitors encounter fortified monastery buildings, stone churches, towers and defensive walls clustered on the main island, together with museum displays and trails linking smaller settlements and natural features. The landscape is a mix of rocky shores, lakes and boreal vegetation suitable for seasonal boat and foot visits.

The monastery was founded in the medieval period and developed over several centuries into a major religious and economic centre in northern Russia. In the early Soviet period parts of the island complex were repurposed as a penal camp and the 1920s and 1930s incarceration period is a significant aspect of the islands’ modern history.

The Solovetsky archipelago lies in the White Sea off the coast of Arkhangelsk Oblast in northwestern Russia, reachable by scheduled boats and seasonal passenger ships from the mainland.
