Solovetsky Monastery
Church Medieval monastery complex on Solovetsky Islands, historic prison camp
A fortified monastery complex on the Solovetsky Islands in the White Sea, with medieval stone towers and 15th-century foundations; tourists visit for monastic architecture, island museums and Soviet-era history.
Solovetsky Monastery is a large fortified monastic complex on the Solovetsky Islands in the White Sea, Republic of Karelia. Founded in the 15th century, it became a major religious, economic and defensive centre in northern Russia.
The site presents a dense ensemble of stone churches, defensive walls and towers, monastery buildings and small harbour structures, with visible phases from medieval construction through later restoration. Exhibits and museum rooms interpret monastic life, the islands’ maritime history and the complex’s later use in the 20th century.
Monastic settlement on the islands began in the 15th century and the monastery developed into a powerful institution with fortified walls and broad landholdings; construction of major stone buildings and fortifications took place from the 16th century onward. After the 1917 revolution the complex was secularized and in the 1920s parts of the islands were used as a detention and labour camp; later in the 20th century restoration and museum work began and religious life was gradually reestablished.
The monastery occupies islands in the White Sea off the coast of northwest Russia; it is remote from major cities, with Arkhangelsk and the city of Kem serving as the principal mainland points for transport connections to the archipelago.
- Access: The monastery complex is located on the Solovetsky Islands in the White Sea and is accessible by scheduled boat services in the ice-free season and by ice road or air links at other times of year.
- UNESCO status: Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its cultural ensemble and historical significance as a monastic, maritime and fortress complex.
What to See #
- Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral: The Transfiguration (Spaso-Preobrazhensky) Cathedral, a central stone church forming the religious heart of the complex, with elements dating to the 16th century and earlier.
- Fortifications: Thick stone fortification walls and defensive towers built and reinforced between the 16th and 17th centuries that enclose much of the monastic complex.
- Convent buildings and museums: Monastic living quarters and museum spaces that now display archaeological finds, ecclesiastical art and exhibits about the islands' history, including the monastery's 20th-century use as a penal camp.
