Solomon's Pools
Reservoir Ancient stepped reservoirs supplying water to Jerusalem
South of Bethlehem, Solomon’s Pools are three ancient reservoirs that once fed Jerusalem; visitors explore the stepped basins, aqueduct remains and surrounding archaeological landscape.
Solomon’s Pools are a group of three ancient man-made reservoirs located south of Bethlehem, traditionally associated with water supply works that served Jerusalem. The complex occupies natural springs and channels and has been an important hydraulic installation in the region for centuries.
The site comprises three stone-lined pools arranged at different levels and connected by masonry conveyance structures; visitors can inspect the reservoir walls, feeding channels and the visible remains of aqueduct works. The pools are a focal point for archaeological interest in ancient water management rather than a modern recreational water facility.
Major construction and modifications at the pools date to the Roman, Herodian and later periods when the waterworks were maintained to feed Jerusalem and nearby settlements. Over subsequent centuries the system was repaired and reused under different administrations until it largely fell out of regular use.
The pools sit a short distance south of Bethlehem in the West Bank, close to the village of al-Khader and within the hilly, cultivated landscape that surrounds Bethlehem.
