Sokollu Mehmed Pasha Mosque, Azapkapı

The Sokollu Mehmed Pasha Mosque in Azapkapı is an Ottoman-era mosque in Istanbul built for Grand Vizier Sokollu Mehmed Pasha. It dates to the 16th century and is associated with the workshop of the imperial architect Mimar Sinan.

The mosque features a compact single-domed prayer hall with a portico and a small courtyard, and its interior includes decorative tile and stone work characteristic of high Ottoman craftsmanship. It is visited for its architectural proportions and period tile panels that survive in the mihrab and adjoining surfaces.

Commissioned by Sokollu Mehmed Pasha during his service as grand vizier, the mosque was built in the later 16th century as part of a programme of imperial patronage that produced numerous urban mosques. It has remained in use as a neighbourhood mosque while also drawing interest from students of Sinan-era architecture.

The mosque sits in the Azapkapı quarter on Istanbul’s European side, close to the Golden Horn and the Eminönü ferry area, within the dense historic fabric of the old city.
