Sognefjord
Fjord Norway's longest and deepest fjord, dramatic mountainsides
Norway’s Sognefjord is the country’s longest and deepest fjord, flanked by steep mountains, waterfalls and small villages; visitors take fjord cruises, scenic drives and hiking in branches like Aurlandsfjord.
Sognefjord is Norway’s largest fjord system, stretching far inland from the North Sea into western Norway and forming a deep, glacially carved valley with numerous side arms. It is one of the country’s most prominent natural features and a focal point for fjord tourism.
The fjord reaches more than 200 kilometres inland and attains depths in excess of 1,300 metres, with steep mountains rising directly from the water on many stretches. Notable branches include the narrow, dramatic Nærøyfjord - part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site - and the Aurlandsfjord, which leads to the tourist village of Flåm.
Visitors commonly travel the fjord by boat cruises, car and the scenic Flåm Railway, which runs between Flåm and the Myrdal mountain station. The region features waterfalls, glaciers visible from higher valleys, and small villages that act as bases for hiking and sightseeing.
The Sognefjord lies in western Norway and is accessed from towns and transport hubs across the Vestland county; ferry links and coastal roads connect many of the fjord’s settlements and viewpoints.
