Socorro Island
Island Volcanic island in Revillagigedo known for diving
The largest of Mexico’s Revillagigedo Islands, Socorro draws liveaboard divers for pelagic encounters-hammerheads, manta rays and humpbacks-and for rare endemic birds and rugged volcanic coastline.
Socorro Island is a volcanic island in the Revillagigedo Archipelago, administered by the state of Colima, Mexico. It is the archipelago’s principal island and is notable for its marine biodiversity.
Socorro is volcanic in origin and has been used intermittently for naval and scientific purposes; human presence on the island has been small and related mainly to those activities.
The island lies in the eastern Pacific as part of the Revillagigedo group, remote from the Mexican mainland and reached principally by sea from mainland ports or via organized dive expeditions.
- Diving and marine life: Part of Mexico's Revillagigedo National Park, the island is renowned for pelagic marine life and is a destination for liveaboard scuba diving focused on large pelagic species.
What to See #
- Volcanic island geography: The island is the largest in the Revillagigedo group and has volcanic topography with cliffs and rocky coasts that drop steeply to the sea.

Tips for Visiting Socorro Island #
- Access to Socorro Island is by licensed liveaboard expeditions to the Revillagigedo/Islas Revillagigedo protected zone - day trips are not feasible, so book a multi-day liveaboard with confirmed permits.
- Choose operators with a proven track record in the Revillagigedo area (they handle permits and safety for strong currents and encounters with large pelagics) and book well in advance, as spaces on permitted trips are limited.
