The mountain is of volcanic origin and its landscape includes lava flows, pyroclastic deposits and talus slopes shaped by past eruptions and mass-wasting events. It has been the subject of geological study because of its large debris avalanche deposit and well-preserved volcanic geomorphology.
Human use has been limited by the volcano’s remote high-altitude location, with occasional scientific expeditions and mountaineering visits. Infrastructure and settlements are sparse in the surrounding high plateau.

Tips for Visiting Socompa #
- Visit Socompa with an organized high-altitude expedition or tour operator that handles permits and local transport - the volcano sits in a remote, high-Andean environment with few services.
- Plan travel in the austral summer (roughly December-February) when conditions are most stable and operators run more trips; allow extra time for acclimatization before approaching high elevations.
