Llullaillaco National Park

Llullaillaco National Park protects the high Andean terrain around the Llullaillaco volcano on the border region between Chile and Argentina. The park preserves puna landscapes and alpine environments at very high elevation.

The park is notable for archaeological remains associated with Inca ritual activity found on the Llullaillaco summit, which are significant in Andean archaeology. The landscape is also important for high-altitude ecology and specialized plant and animal communities.

Conservation designation aims to protect both the archaeological sites and the fragile high-mountain ecosystems; access is limited and regulated to prevent disturbance. Over time the area has been subject to archaeological study and controlled visitation rather than mass tourism.

Geographically the park sits in northern Chile’s high plateau region along the Andes, adjacent to the international border with Argentina, and contains the Llullaillaco volcano and surrounding high-altitude plateaus.

• Plan visits in the Southern Hemisphere summer months (roughly December-February) when access and weather are most favorable, but still expect cold nights and rapidly changing conditions.
