Sochi National Park is a protected area in Krasnodar Krai on Russia’s Black Sea coast, set against the northern slopes of the Greater Caucasus. It was created in 1983 to conserve the region’s landscapes and biodiversity.

The park covers a band of coastal lowlands and steep mountain terrain, with forested slopes, river gorges and waterfalls. Popular activities include day hikes, short gorge walks and scenic drives from the Sochi coastal strip up into the foothills; many routes connect to viewpoints and picnic areas.

The area was designated as a national park in 1983 during the late Soviet period to formalize protection of the western Caucasus near Sochi. Management since then has focused on combining conservation with public recreation and regulated tourism.

The park lies immediately inland from the city of Sochi, Krasnodar Krai, extending from the Black Sea coast into the foothills of the Greater Caucasus. Main access points are reached from Sochi and nearby settlements along the coastal highway.

How to Get to Sochi National Park #

Sochi National Park covers a large area inland from the Black Sea around Sochi and Krasnaya Polyana. The usual approach is via Sochi (Adler) - arrive by air at Sochi/Adler Airport or by rail at Sochi/Adler station, then drive inland on the main mountain roads toward Krasnaya Polyana and the park entrances. Many trailheads and resort areas are within a 30-90 minute drive from central Sochi; local marshrutka minibuses, buses and taxis operate between Sochi/Adler and Krasnaya Polyana.

Tips for Visiting Sochi National Park #

  • Plan hikes and high‑altitude excursions in late spring to early autumn for the most stable weather and to avoid deep winter snow in the high Caucasus zones around Sochi National Park.
  • Start popular valleys and trails early in the morning to beat afternoon thunderstorms and the busiest times at cable‑car access points around Krasnaya Polyana and other gateway resorts.
  • Stop at official park visitor centres before heading into remote areas-staff can advise on trail conditions, permitted routes, and seasonal restrictions that aren't always shown on maps.
