Snowdonia is a mountainous region in northwestern Wales centred on the national park often known by its Welsh name, Eryri. It contains the highest mountains in Wales and is a major area for hiking, climbing, and outdoor recreation.

The region includes distinctive peaks, steep valleys and upland lakes; the highest summit, Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa), reaches 1,085 metres (3,560 feet) and has multiple marked routes of varying difficulty and a mountain railway that runs close to the summit. Popular visitor bases include towns and villages such as Llanberis and Betws-y-Coed, which provide services, transport links and visitor information.

The area has diverse recreational offers from short lakeside walks to multi-day ridge walks and contains historic slate-quarry landscapes as well as natural moorland. Conservation management balances tourism, farming and habitat protection across the park.

Snowdonia lies in northwest Wales and covers a substantial upland area; the nearest larger towns and transport hubs include Bangor and Caernarfon, with road and rail links connecting to other parts of Wales and England.

  • Snowdon height and access: The peak known as Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) is 1,085 m high; ascent routes vary from steep scrambles to graded walking paths and a summit railway reaches an upper station near the top.

How to Get to Snowdonia #

Snowdonia National Park covers much of north‑west Wales; principal gateway towns include Bangor, Caernarfon and Llanberis. Rail services run to Bangor and Llandudno Junction on the North Wales line; from those towns you can drive or take local buses via the A5 and A4086 to reach Llanberis and other trailheads. Mount Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) is commonly accessed from Llanberis (A4086) and the Snowdon Mountain Railway operates from Llanberis station to the summit area in season.

Tips for Visiting Snowdonia #

  • If you plan to summit Snowdon, start very early (pre-dawn in summer) or late in the afternoon to avoid the busiest hours and to catch better weather windows; mountain conditions change quickly so allow extra time.
  • Choose your route based on transport and crowding: Llanberis Path is busiest and served by the Snowdon Mountain Railway (useful to avoid a full hike), while routes from Pen‑y‑Pass (Pyg/Miner's) are steeper but start busier-use park-and-ride or public buses to avoid full car parks.
  • Consider quieter alternatives within the national park (e.g., lesser-known ridges or valleys) if you want solitude-many visitors concentrate on Snowdon itself and miss the park's other high-quality walks and viewpoints.
