How to Get to Snøhetta #
Snøhetta (in the Dovrefjell area) is most commonly approached from the Dovre/Hjerkinn side. Drive on the E6 (European route) to the Dovre/Hjerkinn area and continue on local mountain roads to trailheads. The Dovre Line (Dovrebanen) serves Dovre and Hjerkinn stations; these rail stops are used by hikers to reach trailheads in Dovrefjell.
From Hjerkinn or other parking areas you must proceed on foot along marked mountain trails to reach Snøhetta; expect several kilometres of hiking from the nearest road or station to the summit area.
Tips for Visiting Snøhetta #
- Use Hjerkinn as your usual base and trailhead for Snøhetta - it's on the E6 and has parking, accommodation options and clear trail access into Dovrefjell-Sunndalsfjella National Park.
- Aim for midsummer (July-August) for snow-free routes and long daylight; winter ascents are possible but require alpine experience and equipment.
- Be aware that musk oxen inhabit Dovrefjell - keep a wide distance, do not approach them, and consider a guided trip if you're unfamiliar with wildlife safety in the area.
- If you want a lower-effort overnight option, consider Kongsvoll mountain lodge as a marked base on routes crossing the national park.
