Sněžka
Mountain Czech Republic's highest peak on Czech-Polish border
Sn1b7eka, the Czech Republic’s highest peak in the Krkonoše range, offers marked hiking trails, a weather observatory and cross-border views into Poland; it’s popular for day hikes and winter skiing.
Sněžka is the highest peak in the Krkonoše (Giant) Mountains and the highest point in the Czech Republic, rising to 1,603 metres on the Czech-Polish border. It is a prominent regional landmark and a frequent destination for hikers.
The summit area is a compact rocky plateau that provides wide views across the Krkonoše range and into Poland on clear days. Marked hiking trails lead to the top from nearby towns, with typical ascents taking a few hours from valley trailheads.
The mountain has long been used for grazing and later developed for tourism with footpaths and visitor facilities on both sides of the border. Over the 19th and 20th centuries the summit area acquired shelters and infrastructure to support visitors and weather monitoring.
Sněžka sits on the main ridge of the Krkonoše Mountains, between the Czech town of Pec pod Sněžkou and the Polish town of Karpacz. It is roughly 150 kilometres east of Prague and lies within the protected landscape of the Krkonoše range.
- Access: Sits on the Czech-Polish border between the towns of Pec pod Sněžkou (Czech Republic) and Karpacz (Poland), both common start points for summit ascents.
- Elevation: Peak elevation 1,603 metres above sea level, making it the highest point in the Czech Republic.
- Visitor note: Weather changes rapidly and visibility can drop quickly; warm clothing and waterproofs are recommended even in summer.
