Main image

Snåsavatnet is a large freshwater lake in Trøndelag county in central Norway. It is among the region’s longest lakes, extending for about 40 kilometres.

The lake supports recreational fishing and boating, and settlements lie at its ends and along its shores. Rural roads and small villages around the lake provide access for local recreation and nature watching.

The lake basin is of glacial origin, shaped during the ice ages, and lakeside communities have long relied on fishing and small-scale agriculture. Modern transport and road links have connected the lakeshore villages more closely to regional centres.

Snåsavatnet lies in inland Trøndelag, with the municipality of Snåsa at the eastern end and other small settlements along the shoreline.

  • Length: Stretches roughly 40 kilometres in length and is one of the longest lakes in the Trøndelag region.

Snåsavatnet is reached via the village of Snåsa on the lake’s southern shore. The Nordland Line (Nordlandsbanen) serves Snåsa Station - get off at Snåsa and use local roads or a short taxi ride to reach lakeside access points. The European route E6 also runs close to Snåsa, giving road access along the eastern/southern edges of the lake.

Local county roads follow the shoreline and provide multiple pull-ins and small parking spots; from Snåsa village the lake and its walking/cycling paths are a short drive or a few kilometres’ walk depending on the chosen access point.

Tips for Visiting Snåsavatnet #

  • Access the lake from the village of Snåsa at the eastern end - Snåsa has the railway stop and basic services, making it the most convenient public-transport gateway for visitors to Snåsavatnet.
  • Plan visits in summer for easy boating, kayaking and trout fishing; many recreational facilities and informal boat-launch spots are busiest on weekends, so weekday outings are noticeably quieter.
  • Head to the lake's quieter northern and western shorelines (less served by roads) if you want birdwatching and more solitude - these stretches are often overlooked by day-trippers who stay near the village.
