How to Get to Smederevo
Smederevo is easiest reached via Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport (BEG) or by rail/coach from Belgrade. The town has its own railway and bus stations - Smederevo railway station and Autobuska stanica Smederevo - with regular connections to Belgrade and other regional centres.
Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport (BEG): The main international gateway for Smederevo is Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport, about 45-60 km west of Smederevo. From BEG you can take the GSP airport bus (line 72) or an airport shuttle to central Belgrade (Zeleni Venac / Slavija) in roughly 30-40 minutes; tickets typically cost around 300-400 RSD (≈2.5-3.5 EUR). From central Belgrade you can continue to Smederevo by regional train or intercity bus (see the Train & Bus card). A direct taxi or private transfer from BEG to Smederevo takes roughly 50-75 minutes depending on traffic and costs roughly €50-70 one way; car hire desks are also available at the airport.
Train: Regional trains run between Belgrade (most services call at Beograd Centar / Prokop or occasionally at Beograd Glavna) and Smederevo railway station. Journey time is about 45-65 minutes depending on the service; ticket prices are typically in the range of ~200-450 RSD (≈1.7-3.8 EUR). Trains are a reliable, inexpensive option but check timetables as some services are infrequent on weekends.
Bus: Intercity coaches leave from Belgrade’s Main Bus Station (Beogradska autobuska stanica) to Autobuska stanica Smederevo; the ride takes roughly 45-60 minutes and fares are commonly about 350-600 RSD (≈3-5 EUR) depending on operator. Local buses within Smederevo serve the town and surrounding settlements from the Smederevo bus station; ticket prices for town routes are much lower (see Getting Around).
How to Get Around Smederevo
Smederevo is small and easy to navigate: walking covers the historic centre while trains and intercity buses provide the best value connections to Belgrade. For flexibility (especially when travelling early/late or carrying luggage) taxis or a rental car work well; check regional timetables in advance as services can be limited outside peak hours.
- Regional train (200-450 RSD) - Regional trains connect Smederevo with Belgrade and nearby towns along the Danube corridor. Trains are cheap and reasonably comfortable for short hops; expect about 45-65 minutes to Belgrade from Smederevo. Timetables can be limited outside peak hours, so plan around scheduled departures.
- Intercity bus (350-600 RSD) - Frequent intercity buses run between Smederevo and Belgrade's Main Bus Station; journey time is usually 45-60 minutes depending on traffic. Buses are often faster than local trains for some departures and may stop at smaller towns along the route - buy tickets at the station or from the driver for short trips.
- Local bus (60-150 RSD) - Smederevo has local bus services linking the centre with suburbs and nearby villages. Fares are low and trips are short, but services may be sparse in the evening; carry cash and check departure boards at the Smederevo bus station for up-to-date schedules.
- Taxi & ride-hail (300-1500 RSD (short rides); €50-70 (airport transfer)) - Taxis are convenient for early/late journeys or door-to-door travel - short rides inside town are inexpensive, while trips to/from Belgrade or the airport are costly. Always agree a price or insist on the meter; ride-hailing apps may operate intermittently in the region.
- Car rental / driving (€25-60/day) - Driving gives the most flexibility for exploring the Danube banks and nearby villages. The A1/E75 and main regional roads connect Smederevo with Belgrade in under an hour by car. Parking in the town centre is generally straightforward, but seasonal events at the fortress can make the centre busy.
- Walking - Smederevo's centre is compact and very walkable - the fortress, riverside and main streets are best seen on foot. Walking is the simplest way to move between attractions and to appreciate the town's riverside setting.
