Walking routes and minor roads cross the range and link the small villages of the peninsula; the area is valued for hillwalking, coastal views and its upland habitats. Peaks are typically steep with heath and blanket bog on higher ground.
The mountains are a natural landscape feature shaped by glacial and post-glacial processes and have long been used for grazing and local travel across the peninsula.
Geographically the range occupies the eastern side of the Dingle Peninsula, between the towns of Tralee and Dingle, with slopes descending toward both the Atlantic coast and Tralee Bay.
