Skorba Temples
Archaeological Site Prehistoric Maltese megalithic temple complex, ancient rituals site
Prehistoric temple complex on Malta dating to the Neolithic period, with early stone structures and settlement remains. Skorba attracts archaeologists and visitors interested in Malta’s megalithic heritage and interpretive displays.
The Skorba Temples are a Neolithic archaeological site near Mġarr on the main island of Malta, representing phases of the island’s prehistoric temple-building culture. The remains date to the Maltese Neolithic period, broadly within the 4th to 3rd millennia BCE.
At Skorba visitors encounter the foundations and low remains of prehistoric temple structures and associated occupation layers that illustrate early ritual and domestic activity. The site shows multiple construction phases typical of Malta’s temple culture and is studied for its stratified deposits and architectural development.
The temples and associated deposits were created by Neolithic farming communities that occupied Malta during the island’s temple period. The site records successive building episodes and eventual abandonment prior to later historical periods.
Skorba lies inland in the locality of Mġarr on Malta’s main island, set among agricultural land in the island’s northwest interior.
