Skopska Crna Gora Mountains

Skopska Crna Gora is a mountainous upland region in northern North Macedonia located north of Skopje. It is a local highland area noted for forested slopes and scattered villages.

Hiking routes and rural scenery are the main draws, with mixed deciduous and conifer woodland and traditional village settlements. There are small local churches and vernacular architecture rather than large tourist facilities.

The area has been settled for centuries and functions historically as a rural and pastoral hinterland for Skopje. Modern administrative boundaries place the range and its villages within the northern approaches to the city.

The region sits immediately north of Skopje and extends toward the internal border area with neighboring uplands in the western Balkans. Its landscape is principally low mountains and forested valleys.

• Name: The name literally translates as “Skopje’s Black Mountain” and refers to a compact upland area north of the city of Skopje.
• Access: Road access is normally from Skopje; the area consists of forested hills and small rural settlements rather than developed tourist infrastructure.

From Skopje city center, drive or take local buses toward the northern suburbs and villages at the foothills of the range (e.g., Gazi Baba direction). Access points depend on chosen trailheads; allow 30-60 minutes by car to reach forested starting points.
