Main image

Skokloster Castle is a mid-17th-century Baroque castle on a peninsula on Lake Mälaren in Uppsala County, Sweden. It is renowned for exceptionally well-preserved 17th-century interiors, collections and an historic armoury.

The castle contains richly furnished state rooms, a large armoury and gallery spaces that display period paintings, furniture and arms assembled during the 17th century. Guided tours focus on the Great Hall, the armoury and the castle’s collections; the setting on the lake adds to the site’s visual prominence.

Commissioned and built in the mid-17th century for a Swedish noble, the castle was completed during the 1600s and later became a repository for art and arms. Its interiors and collections largely reflect the tastes and acquisitions of its original patrons and subsequent owners preserved through the centuries.

Set on a wooded lakeshore peninsula on Lake Mälaren, the castle lies between Stockholm and Uppsala in Uppsala County and is accessible by road and by seasonal boat services on the lake.

  • Date of Construction: Construction took place in the mid-17th century for an aristocratic patron and many original interiors survive, making it a notable example of Swedish Baroque architecture.
