Skógafoss is a large, single-drop waterfall on the Skógá river on Iceland’s southern coast, known for its straight, powerful cascade and wide curtain of water. It is one of Iceland’s best-known and most-photographed falls.
A broad sheet of water plunges from a high cliff, producing a consistent spray that often creates vivid rainbows when the sun is out. A stairway alongside the falls leads to a viewing platform at the top, offering a different perspective along the river and access to trails that follow the Skógá valley upstream.
The area around the falls is flat and open, with a visitor parking area and footpaths that make the main viewpoints easily accessible. Hikers often use Skógafoss as a starting point for longer walks along parts of the former coastline and into the upland valley.
Skógafoss has long been a prominent landscape feature and local landmark; infrastructure such as paths and viewpoints has been added to accommodate tourism while protecting riverbanks and the cliff base.
The waterfall sits on the south coast of Iceland near the village of Skógar, adjacent to the Ring Road, and is easily reached from coastal routes between Reykjavík and the southeast.
- Size and spectacle: The waterfall has a drop of about 60 metres and a width of roughly 25 metres, creating a broad, powerful curtain of water frequently accompanied by rainbows on sunny days.
What to See #
- Viewpoints and access: A stairway beside the fall leads to an upper viewpoint at the lip and a path along the top of the cliff, while the base viewpoint provides a close frontal view and frequent spray-driven rainbows.
How to Get to Skógafoss #
Skógafoss is located off Route 1 on Iceland’s South Coast, about 150 km from Reykjavík. There is a parking area and basic facilities; Skógar village is nearby.
