Škocjan Caves
Nature Reserve Vast karst cave system with dramatic underground river
Škocjan Caves are a karst system with an underground river and deep subterranean chambers; the site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and attracts guided groups to suspended walkways and vast caverns.
The Škocjan Caves are a karst cave system in southwestern Slovenia notable for its vast underground canyon and the subterranean passage of the Reka River. The site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its outstanding karst phenomena.
The cave system features a dramatic underground canyon with high vaulted chambers, river passages and natural bridges; guided tours take visitors along suspended walkways and across footbridges through the main sections open to the public. The route highlights large chambers, collapse features and the river’s dramatic disappearance into the karst.
Scientific exploration and mapping of the caves intensified in the 19th and 20th centuries; the site gained international recognition for its geomorphology and ecology and was inscribed on the UNESCO list in 1986. Conservation focuses on protecting the cave environment, its hydrology and the surrounding karst landscape.
The caves lie in the Karst plateau near the village of Škocjan in southwestern Slovenia, within the Municipality of Sežana. The entrance area is set within a rural karst landscape of sinkholes and dolines, accessible by regional roads from nearby towns.
- Guided tours required: Access to the principal galleries is by guided tour only and visits follow a fixed route that includes footbridges and steep stair sections.
- UNESCO listing: Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its exceptional karst phenomena and underground canyon; the site was added to the list in 1986.
What to See #
- Underground canyon: A deep underground canyon formed by the Reka River that drops into the cave system and creates some of the largest continuous underground chasms in Europe.
- Reka River passages: The subterranean course of the Reka River, which disappears into the cave system and re-emerges at springs several kilometres away; sections of the river can be seen on guided tours.

Tips for Visiting Škocjan Caves #
- Book Škocjan Caves tickets in advance for a scheduled guided tour-the reserve operates timed, guided access and walk-in availability can be limited in high season.
- Arrive at the visitor centre early and allow extra time to walk the rim trails and viewpoints above the collapse dolines; many visitors miss the dramatic canyon rim views by rushing straight to the underground tour.
- Combine the cave visit with the surface trails and visitor-centre exhibitions before or after the guided tour-guided cave circuits are timed and you'll get more context by seeing the exhibits and viewpoints alongside the subterranean route.
