Skjoldungen is a large, uninhabited island off the southeast coast of Greenland in the Sermersooq municipality. It is noted for steep, rugged terrain and glaciated peaks.
European charting and exploration of the area occurred during Danish and Greenlandic expeditions; the island has not supported permanent communities in modern times. It has been used intermittently for hunting, scientific study and occasional fieldwork.
Located off Greenland’s southeast coast within Sermersooq municipality, the island sits in the North Atlantic sector adjacent to Greenland’s eastern shoreline and is surrounded by fjord systems and sea ice for much of the year.
