Skilak Lake is a large glacial lake on Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula, within the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. It occupies a broad valley carved by glaciation and fed by mountain streams.
Recreation opportunities include boating, canoeing, fishing and wildlife viewing; several trailheads and a developed campground provide visitor access. The lake’s shoreline and connected streams support rich fish populations and attract anglers and paddlers.
Formed by glacial processes, the lake and surrounding landscape have long been part of Indigenous use and were later included in public lands designated for wildlife conservation and recreation. Management by refuge authorities maintains access and natural values.
Skilak Lake lies on the central Kenai Peninsula in south-central Alaska, west of the community of Soldotna and accessible from the Sterling Highway.

How to Get to Skilak Lake #
Skilak Lake is reached from the Sterling Highway (AK-1). From Soldotna or Kenai follow signs to Skilak Lake Road, which runs east from the highway and ends at the lake. The drive from Soldotna is roughly 30-45 minutes.
Tips for Visiting Skilak Lake #
- Start at the Skilak Lake Road trailheads off the Sterling Highway; the road dead-ends at the lake and many trails fan out from there.
- Bring insect repellent in summer - mosquitoes can be relentless near shorelines and marshy inlets.
- Put in early for canoe trips: prevailing afternoon winds can make the long east basin bumpy.
