Skenfrith Castle is a ruined medieval castle in the village of Skenfrith on the River Monnow, in Monmouthshire, Wales. It is one of the group historically known as the Three Castles that guarded the England-Wales border.
The site contains stone ruin remains that date to the medieval period, with major construction and rebuild phases occurring during the 12th and 13th centuries as marcher lords and royal authorities fortified the border. The castle later fell into disuse and survives today as a ruin illustrating medieval defensive architecture.
Construction and refortification were carried out by a succession of Norman and royal officials during the 12th and 13th centuries to control the Monnow valley and the border area. Over subsequent centuries the castle declined in military importance and became a ruin.
The castle stands beside the River Monnow in the village of Skenfrith, close to the Wales-England border in Monmouthshire, providing a riverside location near local roads and rural farmland.
