Skardu Fort (often called Kharpocho Fort) is a historic fortification overlooking the town of Skardu in Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan region. It occupies a commanding rocky position above the valley floor.
The site gives visitors expansive views over Skardu town, the surrounding valley and nearby river confluences; the fort’s ruins are a prominent local landmark. It is commonly visited from Skardu town as part of valley sightseeing and as a vantage point for photography.
The fort was constructed and used by local rulers of Baltistan as a defensive stronghold; regional accounts attribute rebuilding and repairs by rulers of the Maqpon dynasty in the early modern period. Over time it has been damaged and rebuilt, serving defensive and administrative roles for successive local authorities.
The fort crowns a rock outcrop above Skardu town in Baltistan on the Indus and Shigar river system, within Pakistan’s mountainous Gilgit-Baltistan territory and accessible from Skardu’s local roads.
