Ruins Neolithic village on Orkney with exceptionally preserved houses
On Orkney, Skara Brae presents Neolithic stone houses with original fittings and coastal views; visitors follow boardwalks to see well-preserved domestic rooms and nearby museum displays.
Skara Brae is a well-preserved Neolithic village on the Bay of Skaill on Mainland, Orkney, Scotland, dating roughly to 3200-2500 BCE and noted for its stone-built domestic architecture. The village provides an unusually complete view of prehistoric domestic life in northwestern Europe.
The core site consists of a tightly clustered set of eight stone houses with interconnecting passageways, built-in stone beds, and central hearths, all partially buried and then exposed by storms in the 19th century. The compact arrangement and surviving fittings offer direct evidence of household layout and material culture.
The site was uncovered in the 1850s after storm damage and has been excavated and conserved since then; it is included in the Heart of Neolithic Orkney UNESCO World Heritage designation because of its exceptional preservation and insights into prehistoric settlement patterns. Conservation management balances access with protection from coastal erosion.
Skara Brae sits on the west coast of Mainland, Orkney, near the Bay of Skaill and visible from low coastal cliffs; it is reached by road from nearby towns and has a visitor centre offering interpretation and access to the shoreline viewpoints.
- Houses count: The site comprises eight well-preserved stone houses forming a single village, making it one of the best-preserved Neolithic domestic sites in northwestern Europe.
- World Heritage status: Part of the Heart of Neolithic Orkney UNESCO World Heritage property, with on-site interpretation and coastal viewpoints that show how the settlement was once protected by sand dunes.
