The Skalisty Range is a mountainous subregion in North Ossetia-Alania, Russian Federation, forming part of the northern slopes of the Greater Caucasus. The name means “rocky range” and the area is characterized by steep, rocky ridges and alpine terrain.
The landscape offers high, rugged peaks and alpine valleys that attract mountaineers, hikers and local pastoral use; peaks in the Greater Caucasus, including adjacent ranges, rise above 3,000 metres. Trails and mountain routes cross passes between ridges, and the area is used seasonally for grazing and mountain access.
Geologically the range is part of the uplifted Caucasus orogen and has long served as a natural barrier and corridor in the region. Human use has been dominated by small-scale pastoralism, mountain travel and seasonal habitation rather than large permanent settlements.
The Skalisty Range lies within the administrative borders of North Ossetia-Alania in the Russian North Caucasus, forming part of the greater Caucasus chain that runs west-east across the region.
